Baul Amrita Bindu - #1

Background - Maa's visit to Thiruvannamalai in August, 2025. After the Girivalam, she is having tea on the steps of amphitheatre at Aranyak ( space where maa was hosted by Suromita ). A devotee asked this question about spiritual practice.

Question

Maa, we hear in all these devotional songs where poet ultimately says -

I know nothing

When will I reach you

When will I attain to your feet

Now, these devotees are very advanced spiritual practitioners. If they are saying this after years of sadhana, what does it really mean?

Maa :

Let me share with you my personal experience. When I started on the path , I too had similar reflection. But this episode help clear my doubts.

I used to visit this very senior Baul master enthusiastically to show my singing.

He would say , Maa you have to sing more ,learn more and practice more.

So in few days I would return to him to show how I progressed.

He would says enthusiastically - oh wow! You are almost there. You almost reached. Only little bit left.

So i started practicing even more , and two three years later i go back to him - Dayal Baba ( he was 120 yr old , they said ) ..he again said

Oooo so nice maa, darun hoyche , khub sundor , pray pauche gache - you are almost there.

Then I said to myself , three years and still I didn't reach !

So went back , practiced and came back and sang. Third time. I sing for him. He said -

It is even better , you are almost there.

Then finally I said -

Baba , when will I reach ?

Then he said -

It's always good to remain , not reach.

So , there is always something, a little more.

So therefore , you will find that in most of the poetry of those who are saints , they always put themselves in that position.

Thoda sa baaki rehta hai  ( a little bit is always left )

Wo rehne do ( let it be that way )

Wohi accha hai ( that is how it should be)

Sab jaan liya tho boring hai ( if one knows everything, it's boring.)

Anyone , even greatest of the saint you ask , they will say -

I don't know amma

I am still learning

( Then maa gave similar example about Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Sikshashtakam , who says something similar.)
